Pussy Pumps 101: The Basics

In a very surprising poll that we held on Instagram recently, Doc Johnson discovered that the vast majority of our audience is relatively unfamiliar with pussy pumps. We heard that people aren't sure what to do with them, what the benefits are, or what type is best for their needs, so we've compiled a primer of all the basic questions you may have before trying one out.

What is a pussy pump?
A pussy pump is a device that enlarges the vulva and vagina through suction. There are a few different types, but all of them are meant to increase blood flow and allow for increased sensitivity.

Why would I use one? What's the point?
There are a lot of reasons to use a pussy pump. A vulva that has been pumped has increased the amount of blood flow in the area, so naturally it becomes more sensitive and easily stimulated. For women who take longer to become aroused, pumping before having sex or masturbating can get them turned on must faster.

Is it a medicinal or pleasure thing?
It can be both! Pumps are great options for people who need that little extra help to get going, but there are many purely-pleasure reasons to have one. The enlarged vulva can be a turn on to partners.

I don't have arousal issues, so should I avoid them?
You can be in peak sexual health and still enjoy the benefits of pumping.

Is it safe?
Yes. There are even a few that have been FDA-approved, though, like anything else, if you're worried or experience discomfort, talk to your doctor about what's best for you.

Does it hurt?
It should not hurt! If you're experiencing pain while using a pussy pump, please cease use immediately and talk to your doctor about it.

What are the options in pussy pumps?
Doc Johnson's pumps are all ergonomically curved to fit the vulva just right. There's a manual pump, in which the user squeezes the bulb until they get their preferred pressure. This version has a release valve which allow for the removal of the non-kink hose and inflation bulb while retaining the vacuum pressure in the cup.

Doc Johnson also offers an automatic, vibrating, rechargeable pussy pump. This takes the work out of pumping and adds the option to add vibrations to the sensitive area once it's ready. Because it's working on suction and can vibrate, it can be used either as a hands-free masturbation toy or with a partner.

Now I have one, how do I use it?
First, lube up! Like all other sexual activities, lube is a must! To help remove the cup after you're done, a lube or glide is incredibly helpful. You can put it directly on the pump or on your body, but either way, use it!

Next, place the cup on your vulva, covering the labia and clitoris, or in whatever area you prefer. Begin pumping, either manually or choosing your automatic suction speed. Enough suction will form to keep the pumping chamber in place without holding it.

If you are using a vibrating pump, this is the time to power on and select a function.

When the area is visibly swollen or when you are ready to stop, use the air-release button to gently remove the cup. Do not just take off the cup without turning down the air pressure first.

Any tips?
Many people believe that having a shaved or waxed vulva can create a better experience, because it can create a stronger seal on the skin, but it's not necessary to have a good experience. But the main thing to remember, like with all other toys, is to go in slowly and feel out how to best maximize your pleasure.
