Debunking Sex Cliches: What's Real and What's Fake

The sheet that magically stays up to cover boobs.
Shower sex where nobody slips.
Penetration happening without a second of foreplay.

We've accepted that media lies about sex, but some of those cliches still feel incredibly tempting.

Cliché: You'll Finish at the Same Time
It's just not probable. Yes, it can technically occur, especially if you and your partner have made it an explicit goal, but it shouldn't be an expectation. If you'd like the experience of coming together, talk about it before you begin and keep each other updated throughout—otherwise it's not going to happen.

Cliché: Women Are Always Wearing (Matching) Lingerie
Nope, too expensive to wear every day. Next.

Cliché: Toys are Only for Kinky, Fetish Play
Not every sex toy is a 10-inch anal plug or shibari rope. There are so many toys designed for couples that are not considered freaky by any stretch of the imagination. Both the TRYST and the Optimale Vibrating C-Ring are wearable cock rings designed to give extra stimulation to the clitoris during penetrative sex. It doesn't make either user especially kinky; it just makes the couple have better sex.

Cliché: Sex is like pizza—even if it's done bad, it's still good.
Sorry, but I call bullshit. There are times, hopefully not too frequently, that bad sex is just that: bad. You could be too tired to put any effort in, too drunk, or you could just not be in rhythm with your partner, but either way, it ends up being not worth the effort.

Cliché: The Simultaneous Fall
It's how we know that two characters just had sex in a PG-13 movie. We see them flirting, and then there is a quick cut right to them both falling—while under the covers—into bed. It's an insane idea, that the two partners were both airborne or vertical or defying-gravity during the act, yet we accept it means sex. Truly, if you have ever done this in real life, @ us. We want to know how.
